The Slovak Republic has been independent since January 1, 1993. Its 49,000 sq.km territory is the home of more than 5 million inhabitants, mainly Slovaks, but also Hungarians, Czechs, Poles, Ruthenians and others. Slovakia is located in the heart of Europe. It extends between the Tatra mountains and the famous river Danube. It is a country that offers various types of contrasting terrain including mountain ranges, valleys, lowlands, rivers, lakes and a beautiful panorama of caves. It is a country where you can find natural springs and mud with curative and therapeutic properties or you can discover the history of castles and palaces behind which mystical legends associated with secrets of the past are hidden. Officially the country is divided into territorial regions.
Its greatest river is the Danube.
Dolný Kubín
The district town with 20000 inhabitants, which is situated in the area near Choc and Kubinska hola. It is well-known as the birth place and place of many great Slovak cultural life personalities /P.O.Hviezdoslav, J.Matuška, L.Nádaši jége and others/.
Hviezdoslav´s square
It is basic medieval memorial of the town Dolný Kubín .
Orava Gallery
It was established in 1965 and it is situated in the building of the former council house in Hviezdoslav´s square. The regular exihibitions are held in Orava Gallery and you can also visit here pernament exhibitions of the old art, folk art and Slovak art of the 20th century. Which is connected with Orava.
P. O. Hviezdoslav´s Museum
The building was originally built for Vavrinec Čaplovič´s Library which is now also situated here. Opposite the museum, there is the house, where the poet P.O.Hviezdoslav lived, worked and died.
The colonade bridge
The wooden bridge crossing the Rivere Orava, which connects the old part of Dolný Kubín and Bysterec housing-estate.
